THE HUNTSMAN GAMES -
8 EMASS players win a silver medal!
Several current and former EMASS players, playing for Hannington’s
of Massachusetts under manager Joe DeFelice, won silver medals
in the 65-plus AAA Softball Division of the 2009 Huntsman
Senior World Games in St. George, Utah in October, 2009.
Overall, sixty 65-plus teams competed in the games in seven
divisions (Major Plus, Major, AAA, AA, B, C, and D) with Hannington’s
being the only team from the northeast to earn a medal in
any division. In addition to Joe DeFelice, the EMASS players
included Bud Dodge, Peter Keville, Justin McGrath, Mike Russillo,
Angie Scarcella, Spider Walsh, and Dave Wainwright. The Hannington’s
roster also included Charlie Howe and Al Spirodine from Tewksbury;
Bob Brown from Taylor Aviary (Rhode Island); and Billy Sayball
from the Edge (Connecticut).
Prior to the Huntsman games, Hannington’s finished
2nd (of 10 teams) with a 4-1 record in the 65 AA Division
of a tournament in Mesquite, Nevada.
EMASS 60’s win Tournament of Champions
- January, 2009
Joe Salzano’s guys, playing in their last tournament
as a team, put together
hitting, fielding and pitching as they tattooed themselves
with individual and collective recollections that will forever
defy the senior tendency of forgetfulness. After reaching
the finals of the winner’s bracket undefeated, they
faced the winner of the loser’s bracket, Doc Martins,
a team out of Chicago that had won the Eastern Championship
in order to qualify. The Bostonians, who only had to win 1
game to become the champ, proceeded to lose the first game
11-8. They came back in the final game to win it all 10- 6.
The low scores reflected the skill level of both teams –
or maybe that it was 3:30 pm and play had begun at 8 am that
morning.
The Bostonians placed 5 players on the All-Tournament team:
Dave Clark, Stu Gray, David Hadden, Joe Marmai, and Peter
McClellan. Stu Gray (a pitcher) was selected as tournament
MVP and awarded a gold Mikan bat that was especially
created for the event.
The team: Dave Clark (Cape Cod), Bob Clifford (Quincy), Mike
DiFlece (Canton), Stu Gray (Cambridge), Dave Hadden (Cambridge),
Steve Jones (Wayland), Roger LaPage (Cambridge), Joe Marmi
(Quincy), Peter McClellan (Cape Cod), Ron Pellegrini (Canton),
Al Penny (Peabody), Joe Salzano (Cambridge) and Dave Wainwright
