February,
2006: A word
from the Commissioner:
Happy New Year! May this year bring you good health, more base
hits, better plays in the field and a continued sense of the
fellowship and camaraderie that is EMASS Senior Softball.
To those of you looking at this site for the first time. This
is what we are. We are a twelve year old program with more
than 300 athletes from 3 states and 30 different towns in Massachusetts.
We are all over 55 years old playing softball in both very
competitive and less competitive divisions created geographically
around various towns in eastern Massachusetts.
We have two
weekend leagues, one weekday league and 4 tournament teams
(according to age) that participate in national and regional
events. We have created comfort levels for athletes of every
ability and inclination and are continuing to grow.
This year
we have instituted winter tournaments such as candlepin bowling,
basketball, darts, Texas hold’em and tennis. We encourage
you to contact us to inquire about your own participation.
To our members you should note that the Board has been active
this off season in attempting to create two divisions, each
with its own level of competition, which would allow players
to maximize their playing times as they compete with athletes
of similar ability.
In response to the results of the questionnaire
you received and in order to provide for the safety of our
athletes as well as to get our "game" back we have
eliminated high tech bats from league play. Our social committee
has been active in organizing the winter tournaments and our
recruitment committee is developing new and innovative ways
to attract athletes in the spring.
A lot goes on outside the
lines.
This is the first of what will be brief monthly messages
to appear on this website. I encourage your input into every
level
of what we do. You can always contact
me via this website.
Our league meetings are usually the first Tuesday of every
month at 7:00 PM at the Hamilton School in Newton. It seems
that the same 20-30 people are in attendance every time and
it would be refreshing in more ways then one to see some new
faces.
